NITRILE RUBBER (NBR) Nitrile rubber is the commonly used name for acrylic-nitrile-butadiene blended polymers. The acrylonitrile content varies in technical applications (18-50%) and affects the properties of the elastomer. The higher the acrylonitrile content, the better the oil and fuel resistance. Often a compromise is reached and a medium acrylonitrile blend is chosen. Compared to other elastomers, nitrile rubber has good mechanical properties. Nitrile also has good wear resistance. Nitrile ages rapidly under the influence of air and ozone. Suitable for use in: - aliphatic hydrocarbons (propane, butane, crude oil, mineral oil and lubricants, diesel fuels, fuel oil) - vegetable and mineral oils and fats - HFA, HFB and HFC liquids - many dilute acids, bases, saline solutions at low temperatures - water (up to 100ºC for special mixtures) Not suitable for: - high aromatic fuels (special blends should be used for special fuels) - chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene). - polar compounds (ketone, acetone, acetic acid-ethylene ester) - strong acids - glycol-based brake fluids - - in contact with air and ozone, rapidly ageing. Heat resistance: Resistant to heat up to 100ºC, with a shorter lifetime up to 120ºC (higher temperatures cause faster ageing). Ageing is slower in hot oil than in hot air. Cold resistance: Nitrile can withstand cold temperatures between -20ºC and -50ºC, depending on the composition.
